The difference between DDP and DDU
DDU stands for “Delivered Duty Unpaid”, where the exporter bears the costs and risks of delivering the goods to the designated place, but does not include import fees such as tariffs. DDU stands for “Delivered Duty Unpaid”, which means “Delivery Duty Unpaid (named destination)”. This trade term refers to the delivery of goods between the exporter and the importer at a specific location in the importing country. In this process, the exporter shall bear all costs and risks of delivering the goods to the designated place, and shall also bear the costs of customs formalities. However, it should be noted that this term does not cover tariffs, taxes and other official fees when the goods are imported. If the importer fails to complete the import customs clearance process of the goods in a timely manner, the importer shall bear the additional costs and risks.
DDP stands for “Delivered Duty Paid”, where the exporter bears all costs and risks, including import customs clearance and tariff payment. DDP stands for “Delivered Duty Paid”, which means “Delivery Duty Paid (named destination)”. This trade term means that at the destination jointly designated by the importer and exporter, the exporter must complete the import customs clearance formalities and then hand over the goods to the importer. In this process, the exporter not only bears all the risks of the goods arriving at the designated location, but also handles the customs clearance procedures at the port of destination and pays the relevant taxes, fees and other expenses. Therefore, the seller has the greatest responsibility under the DDP term. If the seller cannot obtain an import license directly or indirectly, this term should be selected with caution.
The main difference between DDU and DDP is who will bear the import customs clearance procedures and costs. The core difference between DDU and DDP is that the two have different entities that bear the risks and costs involved in the import customs clearance at the port of destination. Specifically, if the exporter has the ability to complete the import customs declaration independently, then it will be more appropriate to choose the DDP term; if the exporter cannot handle the relevant matters by itself, or is unwilling to bear the import procedures, risks and costs, then the DDU term is more appropriate

DAP transfers risks at delivery, and the seller is responsible for costs and transportation, but does not include insurance obligations. DAP, or delivery at destination, is a new term added to the 2010 Incoterms. In contrast, DDU was a term in the 2000 Incoterms, but has been eliminated in the 2010 Incoterms. DAP is applicable to any mode of transport, which means that at the designated destination, when the goods are unloaded from the means of transport and handed over to the buyer, the seller completes the delivery and bears all risks of the goods to the designated place.
The seller needs to provide all necessary documents and information assistance, while the buyer is responsible for receiving the goods and import customs clearance procedures. The seller needs to provide the buyer with the documents required at his own expense so that the buyer can receive the goods as described in A4/B4. The buyer is responsible for receiving the goods, obtaining an import license or other official approval certificate at his own risk and expense, and completing the import customs clearance procedures for the goods
